What is stress?

Stress is the body’s natural response to external pressure, threat, or change. In small amounts, stress can be beneficial, but chronic stress can cause serious harm to both mental and physical health.

Symptoms of stress

Physical symptoms

Headache, muscle tension, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, digestive system problems, weakened immune system, chronic fatigue.

Emotional symptoms

Irritability, anxiety and constant nervousness, sadness or a depressed mood, loss of self-confidence.

Cognitive and behavioral symptoms

Difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, changes in eating patterns, alcohol misuse, social withdrawal.

Causes of stress

Work environment — excessive workload, deadline pressure, professional burnout.

Personal life — relationship difficulties, bereavement, financial challenges.

Traumatic experiences — such as violence or accidents that may lead to PTSD.

Risks of chronic stress

Chronic stress can lead to depression, anxiety disorders, and panic attacks. From the perspective of physical health, it also increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Stress management and treatment

Psychotherapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) teaches you how to re-evaluate stressful situations and develop effective coping strategies.

Relaxation techniques

Progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, and meditation. Art therapy is also effective in reducing stress.

Medication support

If needed, medication treatment — a psychiatrist will select the most appropriate medication for you individually.

When should you see a specialist?

Seek a psychiatric consultation if stress is interfering with your daily functioning, your physical symptoms are becoming chronic, or your emotional state is worsening.
